What is GEAR UP?
GEAR UP = An acronym for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
- A competitive federal grant program through the U.S. Education Department (USED) program since 1998
- 6- or 7-year grants to local partnerships or to states to offer support services to students in high-poverty areas
- Intent: Increase number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education
- GEAR UP must serve at least one grade level of students, beginning no later than the 7th grade, and follow them through high school graduation (6-year grant) or through first year in college (7-year grant)
Federal GEAR UP Goals
- Provides: Critical early college awareness and support activities like tutoring, mentoring, academic support, enrichment programs, financial literacy information, college awareness
- Mandates: Cooperation among K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, local and state education entities, businesses and community- based organization to foster sustained, systemic change in middle and high schools
- Leverages: Local resources to match the federal investment dollar for dollar. Matching funds may be in cash, in-kind services or donation and must directly support the services required by the project
NYGEAR UP Local Partnership Sites’ Required Activities
- Annual consent form signed by parent/guardian
- Annual orientation for students
- Tutoring/homework assistance
- Mentoring/Counseling
- College Tours
- SAT prep
- Collaborate with State Partners (e.g., providing ReadiStep in 9th grade; PSAT/NMSQT, Non-Cognitive Skills Curriculum, Parent Engagement workshops and engagement plan; PD for teachers, counselors, administrators)
- Site Advisory Committee (minimum members: 1 site coordinator, principal, teacher, parent/guardian, executive from lead organization, business leader)
